  • SYLPH
Sylph is an imaginary/mythological, spirit of the air originating from the alchemical works of Paracelsus. This 16th century Swiss-German physician, botanist, alchemist, astrologer and general occultist not only established the role of Chemistry in medicine but developed the four elemental categories: gnomes, undines, sylphs and salamanders. These correspond to the Classical elements of antiquity earth (solid), water (liquid), wind (gas), and fire (plasma).

Sylph is now used to describe the term for minor spirits, elementals, or faeries of the air. I chose to represent her with these airy wings with a hint of a body depicted by the transparent tubing.

Materials: Hand dyed/batiked cotton and linen fabric, plastic tubing, fishing line, threads/strings and staples.
